What’s acupuncture and what’s it good for?

Acupuncture is the use of very thin needles on energy acupuncture points to move Qi and treat pain and other symptoms and restore the natural balance of the body.  Acupuncture has been used in China for about 3.000 years and is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the treatment of acute and chronic pain and other medical conditions.

At Fysiopuntura we treat injuries and medical conditions within the scope of Orthopedic Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, Body and facial rejuvenation and prevention for health and wellness.  We do treat some cases of peripheral nerve injuries.  Contact us with your specific concern to see if we’re able to help you.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

You’ll feel a minor sensation when the needle enters your skin and once the needle reaches the Qi, which is the body’s energy.   You won’t feel  anything once the needles are in your body or have been removed.

I’m afraid of needles, what can I do?

You can try needle acupuncture and decide if you want to continue it or if you’d prefer to try laser acupuncture which is totally painless.

Are acupuncture needles reusable?

No, we use disposable needles every single visit.

How long do needles stay in my body?

It depends on the needling technique we use and the purpose we’re seeking.  In some cases, it could be as short as 3-5 minutes and some other as long as 28 minutes.

Can I move while the needles are in my body?

No, you will need to rest in a comfortable positions, usually lying down during the duration of your acupuncture treatment.

How many treatments do I need and how often?

The duration of your treatment will depend on your diagnosis and the time you have had your injury for.  As a general rule, long standing injuries require more number of treatments.  The frequency of your visits will depend on the severity and the time you have had your injury for.  Your Physical Therapist will let you know how many sessions and the frequency of appointments you’ll need based on your initial evaluation.

Why to combine the use of acupuncture with the Physical Therapy treatments?

Both modalities complement each other.

Acupuncture often times offers fast results which is why is great to manage the nagging symptoms.  Once the symptoms have reduced or are gone, acupuncture helps to restore the energetic balance that was disrupted getting to the root cause of the problem at the energetic level.

Physiotherapy is very useful to retrain the body on normal postural and movement patterns, habits and exercises to help maintain results in the long term.
