FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS …

Is it better, to use ice or heat, or both?
Using ice is only convenient for the first 48-72 hours of injury to prevent and control initial inflammation after trauma or injury. After this time, it is convenient to use heat if there are symptoms of pain and muscle tightness. But the excessive use of heat tends to cause inflammation, so it's best to limit its use to 15-20 minutes a day. Alternating the use of ice and heat in specific ways and times is best than the use of any of these alone for cases of chronic inflammation.
Is acupuncture really effective?
Yes. This technique has been around for over 5.000 years for a reason, it works. For many years, science wasn't able to explain the mechanism involved in its effectiveness, reason why they used to refer to it as placebo therapy or simply ineffective, despite the fact that people reported improvement in their symptoms and overall health over and over. More recently, science has been able to measure and demonstrate that there are changes in electrical conduction at acupuncture points despite the fact that when opening a cadaver, there's no physical evidence that acupuncture points exist. Likewise, biochemical changes in the body have been recorded. Changes such as the release of endorphins, enkephalins and opioids by the body itself. These substances have the function of reducing pain. The Health Organization (WHO), strongly recommends the use of acupuncture for a long list of problems, many of them being pain management. With the opioid crisis in the world, acupuncture is #1 in the treatment of chronic pain. Also, it doesn't have side effects and does not create dependency.
The exercises make me sore, I don't like feeling like this after exercise
As we said in the previous question, this type of pain is not a sign of injury but if the pain is too strong and limits your ability to move normally, it's an indicator that the intensity of the exercise performed was much higher than what your body is normally used to do. In that case, reducing the intensity of your exercises a little is appropriate.
How does acupuncture work and what is it good for?
Acupuncture uses the science of the energetic points and meridians in which Qi (Vital Energy) flows in our body. It’s a very complex system which when properly stimulated with acupuncture needles, it restores the energetic balance of the whole body system producing beneficial effects and often times a total and permanent cure. Like Physiotherapy, the effects of acupuncture are cumulative, meaning, several treatment sessions are required to reach and maintain results. Resolving stagnation and energy movement patterns that have been created for years and have caused physical symptoms takes time to resolve. Restoring the balance of a system that is suffering doesn't happen overnight but in many cases it is possible. In some cases, a person notices improvement and even remission of their symptoms in a single session. This varies from person to person and according to the type of problem we are treating. However, even in this type of “miracle cure” in one session, more sessions may be necessary in order to treat the cause and not just the symptom of the problem. This can only be determined by a trained acupuncturist and will vary with each patient, your condition and its response to treatment.
What is the difference between receiving massages and doing physical therapy?
Massage is a passive modality (someone else or yourself rub your body while the body or the massaged part remains relaxed) which works on soft tissues improving their circulation, mobility and elasticity. Physical therapy uses the posture and movement of the human body to restore or maximize its ability to carry out our daily activities, work and recreational activities with the highest level of ease and comfort to maintain a good quality of life. Physical Therapy can use passive techniques like different soft tissue mobilization techniques (massage), taping, heat, ice, electrostimulation, ultrasound and laser among others; and uses active techniques such as physical exercise, postural reeducation and body movement, education in healthy lifestyles and ergonomics.
Is it better to do yoga or Pilates?
It depends on the constitution, condition of the musculoskeletal system, pathology- if there is one, goals and technique with which each one is performed. Both can be useful depending on these and other individualized factors. Both of them, in the wrong condition and with the wrong technique can cause damage or aggravate a problem.
I used to play sports but I was injured and I think it's better not to play sports again so as not to get injured again. Is this what is best for me?
No, significantly reducing the level of physical activity has negative consequences at the cardiovascular, osteo and neuromuscular level. The right thing to do is to get diagnosed and treated by experts in your type of injury and gradually return to your level of physical activity. If due to age, degenerative changes or greater risk than benefit with the level of activity you were following prior to injury, the previous activity should be modified or activities more appropriate to the specific situation of the person should be sought. Regardless of age and pathology, physical activity is not optional, it is a must to maintain health, independence and quality of life for everyone.
What is the color and resistance sequence in the elastic bands (theraband) used to exercise?
From light to strong: yellow, red, green, blue, black, gray, gold.
