What is Telerehabilitation?

Tele Rehabilitation, also known as Virtual Physiotherapy, Online Physiotherapy or Remote Physiotherapy, refers to the Physiotherapy service provided in real time through a technological platform instead of a face-to-face session in the office.

While it is true that passive therapies such as manual therapy (massage, joint mobilizations) and the use of physical modalities such as heat, electrotherapy or ultrasound are part of some of our treatments, under no circumstances are they the most important part, nor the only part of a Physical Therapy session. In fact, it is well known that the indiscriminate use of passive therapies generates dependency of the patient towards his therapist and by itself does not offer long-term results.

Evidence-based medicine has been transforming our treatment options in Physiotherapy- making the passive modalities lose more and more importance. Our role as Physiotherapists, as experts of movement, is to educate the patient. What every patient really needs is physical activity and a lot of education. For this reason, the need for face-to-face visits is less and less essential.

TeleRehabilitation is an excellent modality to educate those patients who cannot physically visit an office either for reasons of quarantine or due to time and travel difficulties.

Online physiotherapy has become the best way to start and/or continue your physical rehabilitation treatments without extra travel time and costs, with quick appointment scheduling at convenient times, from the comfort of your home (or the office) and minimizing the risk of contagion by COVID-19.

What does the research say about Telerehabilitation?

There are several studies that have evaluated the results obtained with face-to-face therapy in office and with online therapies. You’ll be glad to hear that the findings from several studies conducted in the US and Australia, indicate that the results obtained with online physiotherapy are quite similar to the results obtained in face-to-face therapy.

Physical exercise, patient education on healthy lifestyles and injury prevention, education about the medical condition and how to self-manage it; and neuromuscular reeducation (teaching good posture habits and healthy ways of movement) are excellent at improving mobility, reduce pain and break the cycle of symptoms, as they handle the real cause of the problem and not just the pain; which makes them effective and long-term solutions.
